Pictured here in front of the Municipal Council building in Kassala is Webb’s English interpreter, Mahmoud Mohamed Ali (who also served as the town clerk) during his time in Sudan. Two years earlier, Sudan gained independence after its nearly 136-year union with Egypt and its 56-year occupation by the British.
