One of a pair of Imperial prayer banners in imperial yellow k'ossu made up of one wide and two narrow strips attached to a gilded bronze plaque with two dragon heads. The central strip, terminating in slit shaped ends finished with wedge-shaped plaques of gilded bronze, is formed of blue-black k'ossu with an inscription in gold characters mounted in yellow k'ossu, which has a design of the Eternal Sea, slender, five-clawed dragons, bats, and clouds in shades of blue, green, violet, crimson, and pink. The side strips suspended from shaped gilt bronze plaques incised with scrollscarry the same dragon and cloud design and terminate in three narrow strips of blue k'ossu with meander fret in gold. The strips are attached to the yellow band by three gilt bronze fungus heads, which are repeated on ends of blue strips. Lining of egg-shell silk of medallion design. These banners are said to have flanked the Emperor's private alter in the Temple of the Forbidden City. Of superb quality and condition. See Harris label for translation of inscriptions.

Priest's apron (theatrical?) of gold k'ossu with five-clawed dragons in green. (Note details woven with peacock feathers). From the peplum band of apron hang six rows of loose tabs, three in each row, and each of varying length. Each of the two upper strips is tipped with three brass pellet-bells. The six lower, longest strips are edged with long tassel. Strip, peplum, and apron proper banded with black velvet. The apron attached to a wide waist band of rust-red satin, and lined with pink silk. Seal inscription on lining notes that this apron belonged to the T'a Chih theatre.

Short concubine(or riding?) coat of brick red satin brocaded in shades of green, yellow, blue, rose and gold. In front, on each side of opening, a rampant, five-clawed dragon grasping heavenly jewel. In back, one very large sitting dragon. Border of overlapping, semi-circular wave forms(Cf.42.8.4) with symbols of the eight precious things. Original sleeveless coat has been filled in with wide red brocaded sleeves finished with cuffs made of bands of the body brocade bordered by strips of modern(?) embroidered satin. Applied around bottom and up openings at side and front are borders of modern embroidery, blue on black, which terminate in trefoil ends under arms and at upper middle front opening. Neck finished with band of modern black and gold brocade. Lining of modern blue brocaded silk. Satin ground of brocade faded in some areas.

Buddhist priest robe of K'ang Hsi blue k'ossu with gored end. Mnay five-clawed dragons in gold, those in the border having th symbolic universe design below. The small squares representing Buddha's mendicant days are alternately filled with gold dragons and large peony blossoms in shades of red, pink, and green. The shaped gores are filled with peony blossom and trailing tendrils. Upper border contains loose cloud forms and bats in end sections. Colors include green, red, pink, yellow, olive green , puce, mauve, yellow coral, peach and burnt orange. Compare treatment of clouds, wave border and dragons with the K'ang Hsi robes. K'ossu broken in many spots. The squared and gored areas set off with bindings of yellow satin. Lined with thin rose silk. Canopy flap with standard design, at center of upper top.

Imperial robe of pale coral-colored k'ossu with nine 5-clawed dragons in gold. In ground loosely-drawn clouds, Taoist emblems, long-life characters, bats clutching a garlanded double peach in their mouths, and peonies in shades of blue, green, red, pink, and grey. Four of the ancient synbols the sun, moon, constellation, and mountains appear on this robe. Border of straight slanting stripes seperated by a line of regularly disposed, tight cloud forms from over-lapping waves among which appear Buddhist emblems, branches of coral, and to each side of sacred mountain a sprouting dragon. Border repeated on sleeve above a strip of dark blue k'ossu edged in gold and bright light blue. Collar band of the same. Robe slit at sides and with thin tobacco-brown figured in silk lining. Note nine dragons embroidered for emphasis. It is suggested that this robe belonged to the empress who had a fondness for coral. (But a man's coat?) cf. 42.8.52

Border of rolling waves in shades of green, blue and ivory in overlapping half-moon shapes four on each side of mountain motif. In the waves appear symbols of the eight precious things. Design includes five large medallions containing the white crane with sacred fungus; loose clouds, phoenix, sun and moon symbols on shoulders, five-clawed gold dragons, Taoist symbols and numerous good-luck characters in shades of blue, green, pink, red, yellow, peach and violent purple. In the sleeve bands are medallions with the sacred trigrams, On the back panel a border that is conventional except for the fact the the striped area breaks through the rolling wave area in places. Tight clouds; waves scattered with large blossoms, swastikas, bats, Buddhist, and other symbols. Crane and bat border in front. Long collar band of yellow with swastika fret diaper in blue, bats, cranes, and clouds. Below , on each side, a band of white k'ossu with Foo dog on one side; dragon on other. Border repeated in miniature at elbows, where sleeves continue with band of dark blue ridged silk ending in cuffs of dark blue k'ossu with body motifs. Collar and front band of same blue k'ossu. Lama robe of embroidered yellow satin used in temple dances?, the theatre?. Front upper section and wide girdle area embroidered with loosely drawn clouds and chilin (?) in shades of blue, green, red, mauve, mulberry, and pink. bordering the girdle area, two bands of black velvet with cursive, porfile dragons in couched gold threads. Skirt composed of four shaped panels bordered, on lower part, with scrolls of pale blue and gold brocade. In lower section of each an embroidered Foo dog in shades of puce and reddish brown. Upper section of panel embroidered in loop (knot?) stitch with all-over pattern of hanging leaf froms representing chain armor in pale pink, blue, and green. At top and bottom tow monster masks in satin and couched stitch. This upper area given the shape of a rounded panel by a band of black velvet studded with alternate metal bosses and larger, brass discs with a dragon in relief. The band is bordered in turn with 'tiger claws' of vari-colored brocade of type in robe 42.8.129. This panel motif repeated onloose epaulets over shoulders, and in upper back section of robe. In the ground, in addition to the twelve symbols(note that constellation and [double happiness(?)] have been almost cut away with altering) - loose clouds, long life characters, bats with the double peach, and taoist symbols in shades of blue, green, red, pink, yellow and olive green. Conventional border of straight-edged slanting stripes; tight, regularly grouped clouds (cf. 42.8.21 for very similar arrangement) shallow area of rolling waves and spray in which appear Buddhist emblems. Tibetan Wedding (?) skirt made of strips of yellow, fuschia, lavendar, pink, green , orange, purple, iron red and rose brocaded satin, some with the designs in color. Hanging from the skirt, knife-pleated in side sections, are wavy embroidered strips, finished with bells, tassels, and pearls. Main panels have an elaborate design of applied embroidered borders, braids, applique silk flowers and rosettes on the main and bottom borders. Lining of thinblue silk; an extremely elaborate skirt of quality not often found. Embroidery done in many stitches satin needlepoint, loop, knoot, stem, etc.

The shape of the robe is Taoist and the satin is brocaded in an all-over design in spaced, vertical lines, with running Sanskrit characters (prayers) in gold thread. Over this ground on back are enbroidered in laid couched work figures of the 18 Lohans. Colors of embroidery (later work ?) include blues, yellow, rose, peach, green, black, ivory and tan. On left shoulder blade a pagoda; on right, a dragon. Around bottom, sides and front a border of soft blue satin brocaded with the body characters in silver threads. This border banded, on outer edge, with a narrow strip of the puce brocade and set off from main body of robe with a narrow binding of pale beige satin with reveals brocaded areas. Robe of plum black satin of very large size probably designed to wear over other robes for warmth. The robe is in two sections joined at the waist, and has a very full skirt, with short tucks under a broad girdle section which hangs over skirt like a short peplum. Upper body section of robe embroidered with four large 5-clawed dragons in couched gold thread; tight clouds, bats, and Buddhist symbols in shades of blue, green, lavendar and strong violet. Beneath main dragon, front and back, the wave and sacred mountain motif usually appearing in border of robes. The peplum section, which projects into a loose tab at the opening of the robe, embroidered with horizontal dragons in gold,bats, clouds,etc. It is edged with bands of brown and gold floral brocade. The skirt embroidered, back and front with two large horizontal dragons, clouds, bats, and Buddhist emblems. Beneath is sea and earth motif. The ground of the sky area is covered with a swastika fret diaper on which appear sprawling, white-eyed clouds, the 12-symbols, bats carrying swastikas, jui scepters, etc, and good luck characters. Border of unusually narrow slanting wavy stripes topped by a narrow strip of clouds tightly massed, and a double row of billows in which appear the Buddhist symbols and Precious Things. Note the unusual treatment of the wine cups. Robe slit at sides and lined with yellow damask with double jui medallions. Band and cuffs of blue-black satin embroidered in blue and gold.

Taoist priest robe with couched gold ground embroidered with silk and silk floss in satin stitch and couching. On the back the customary pagoda medallion flanked by the Sun and Moon symbols. In the field, tight, white-eyed clouds, two large dragon medallions, bats carrying various good luck emblems, white cranes, double peaches and Taoist symbols. At the bottom of the field the Heavenly Sea. The front of the robe is adorned at the shoulders with large medallions carrying frontal dragons. Beneathe each medallion is a pagoda resting on a heap of clouds. In the field, tight clouds, bats, cranes and Buddhist symbols. The borders are embroidered in couched silk twist with Buddhist symbols, dragons, carp, Precious Things, clouds and other symbols. The border sections are of fine workmanship and are undoubtedly older that the major portion of the robe itself.

Imperial 12-symbol robe of yellow satin embroidered with colored silks in satin stitch and with couched gold threads. Nine 5-clawed dragons in a field of tight white-eyed clouds. Crimson bats and good-luck characters, together with the traditional 12 symbols, appear in the field. Deep border of slanting stripes topped by tightly massed groups of clouds and surging waves. In the waves appear heaps of jewels, Precious Things, and branches of coral. The colors are brilliant but not strident. The robe has been re-tailored with narrow, standing collar and plain dark blue satin sleeves. The border band is so applied that most of the 'constellation' is hidden. Lining of medium blue satin, modern buttons. Robe slit at front, back, and sides.
