The distinctive grave marker of Kosi Tokponu, who died July 28, 1956, shows him adorned in traditional kente cloth, a pith helmet, and a wristwatch—a testament to the histories of transnational contact on the African continent. Such an ornate, figural burial marker highlights the status of the deceased, and the cross rising at the back of the structure suggests that Webb photographed this in a Christian cemetery.
