One of two jars Japan’s first ceramic culture, the Jōmon, produced strongly tactile pottery over 3,500 years ago. This lavishly decorated bowl was probably used during religious ceremonies. Its flamboyant rim, a typical feature of the middle period of Jōmon pottery, is known as the “fire-flame” type, because the coils of clay resemble leaping flames. The word jōmon, after which the historical period is named, means “cord markings” and derives from the distinctive patterns produced by rolling a rope-wrapped stick across the surface of the clay. The lower portion of this vessel bears these markings, together with whimsical designs carved into the surface of the clay.

Karaori (Outer Noh robe), brocade of grape vines with autumn grasses and gold bamboo lattice motif on blue-grey twill weave silk. The design is not created through embroidery as it appears to be, but with the Karaori brocade technique of floating the weft threads of glossed silk to create the various floral and lattice patterns. This allowed for only a few centimeters of fabric to be woven per day, making such robes extremely rare and expensive works of art. This garment has been used in only a few recorded performances since its manufacture accounting for its exceptionally fine condition.

Wool, cotton and silk. Natural wool with white cotton weft alternating to make very thin stripes in weft faced plain weave. Natural wool warp. At one end there is a thin stripe of red, followed by natural, follwed by two thin blue stripes. The other end is the same but with black stripes instead of blue. Along both sides silk has been introduced to make three groupings of short stripes near the edge on the proper right side and two groupings of similar stripes near the edge on the proper left . These shorter stripes are various combinations of red, purple, brown, cream (all silk), white (cotton and black (wool) and are approximately three inches long. Tufts of the silk embellish the stripes on the face of the Haik on all groupings except one grouping of seven stripes near one end which is embellished on the reverse. Warp is bound tightly in small groupings near edge of textile at both ends. Fringe varies but averages about three inches.
