This figure with both hands raised represents the Buddha subduing Mara, the god of desire. In addition to the monastic dress, the image is adorned with several of the accoutrements of royalty. These include an elaborate diadem, long earrings that fall to the shoulders, a necklace and armlets. The Buddha stands on a lotus petal. The lotus flower is the Buddhist symbol for spiritual purity.
