On the back of this vintage photograph, Webb’s handwritten caption reads “Council Meeting Cotton Growers of the Gezira Wadi Medani, Sudan.” A disastrous spring crop in 1958 had put the region’s cotton industry in crisis; it is possible that this group convened to discuss the ramifications. A careful documentarian, Webb kept a journal during his five-month journey to provide context for his images.
