Spring Returns

On an early morning walk along the Wind River in Dubois, WY, the full moon was setting as the sun was rising. At this location, sandy barren hills come down to one side of the river, while cottonwoods and willows thrive on the opposite bank.

This is an abstract painting composed of organic shapes, curvy lines, and cool and warm colors. You might imagine a birds-eye view of a spring landscape. A mint green shape resembling a cool stream flows in the lower section of the painting, while bright yellow shapes hug the irregular shoreline. The texture is smooth and orange lines accent fluctuating shades of yellow. This painting evokes temperature changes in the air and on land.

Walking on an empty beach in Washington State we saw something on the shore that appeared to be a ribbed rubber raft. Upon closer inspection it was a dead whale. As the tide can in and moved its body back out to sea, we felt that we might be the only humans ever to witness its life.

Peaceful Journey

this is an abstract exploration of the texture and essence of stone as inspired by the ancient stones of Ireland.  It is a painting on paper torn up and collaged to a panel and then painted further with oil and cold wax medium.  I've utilized a limited palette and focused on the texture and shapes which are reminiscent of the ubiquitous dry stack walls crisscrossing the island.

1st Hour

An encaustic painting of a desert background with a photo of a zebra printed on tissue paper and embedded into the encaustic wax medium. Sienna pigmented wax dots were added in vertical columns and horizontal rows to add texture to the piece and highlight the zebra. 

Serengeti Stroll

A female face tilted to the left emerges from the from corner of the canvas.  She looks more floral than human. She has no hair; only the emerging petals on the left side of her head that slowly fade in a rose orange soft color that covers the top of her head. Out of her right eye a tear drop emerges, surrounded by blue-greens fading into rose and orange colors.  A pink and red flower petal drapes her right cheek, stopping at the nose that is slightly crooked, and glows a soft yellow orange. Under her nose are burgundy rose red lips. They appear to be lips and a rose petal.  What stands out the most is the texture and patterns that are painted and scratched into and over the canvas. Emerging from her head are turquoise lines that look like a crown or halo.  The over feeling of the painting is love and empathy.

This image was made in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon in the fall of 2015. It was made to show the motion, beauty cool environment of the numerous waterfalls in the Gorge by focusing on a high contrast section of falling mist.

Into The Dusk

Earth from outer space is represented on birch plywood with acrylic and distemper paints in earth and cloud colors.  Gouged with a router across this landscape are random curved lines, spray painted aluminum, representing pipelines and channels of industrial waste which are destroying the natural environment.  Upper right of this earth is curved where it meets outer space.
