Circular Growth

Fungi grows on trees in colorful arcs of orange, sienna and blue. These arcs of living fungus are shown with dead leaves because part of their benefit is in how they decompose and create new life. Besides being beautiful, they are living organisms that support the ecosystem of the entire planet.

In the forest

A watercolor of my sister Nubby walking on the prairie path in the Carleton College Arboretum.  My sister has early onset Alzheimer's.  Spending time in nature helped center and ground her. This is one of a series of her, in her hat, as she travels this journey.

The busy image is made with gouache on paper. It is created with a flat, graphic aesthetic in which the colors and shapes of food-like objects are emphasized more than their volume. The central figures are two pig's feet crossing each other, creating an X formation. Surrounding the pig's feet are slices of ox tail meat and leaves of Chinese cabbage. To the right of these are green cubes and an outlined bunch of bananas. To the left are banana slices and scoops of ice cream that appear to be falling from the top-left corner of the picture plane.
