A small Tea House made of vertical sticks of driftwood on green base.  The windows are covered with tracing paper and each has a Japanese symbol on it.  The roof is made from small rectangles of birchbark which are cut to appear like  wooden shingles.

HPX:  Hyperbolic Paraboloid Extension, An Anticlastic Brass Form

This 3-D brass sculpture started as a flat sheet of 18-gauge brass.  To turn it into a hyperbolic paraboloid or anticlasitc form, the corners are forged over curved stakes along the North-South and East-West axes in opposing directions.  Convex curve along one axis, concave along the other.

The "X" of the HPX describes the way the hammer moves metal from the center of the square outward.  The edges are pulled and stretched and eventually extend enough to meet at diagonally opposite points.

This double curvature shaped shell appears in architecture as a saddle roof.  Despite its rather modern, artistic appearance, this anticlastic shape is highly practical for a roof because it cannot hold water.  To make a synclastic type of form, on the other hand, the axes are moved in the same direction like a bowl or roof gutter.  And, yes, synclastic forms can hold water.

 A clear glass vase filled with approximately 1200 dimes which were retained from the artist's pocket change over the course of ten years.  A paper ribbon around the inside of the vase reads "Ten years ago he began to save every dime; ten cents times ten years, mementos of moments reflected in the smallness of one thin dime.  He knew life could turn on a dime but didn’t know the stories that would come, stories of family vacations, of family reunions, of patience, of divorce, of court dates, of first dates, of theater, of coffee, of bread and milk and eggs, of music, of the day he got his dog, of the day he lost his job, of the days he followed his dreams, stories of new friends, of travel, of graduations, of new clothes, of funerals, of wine, of art, of books, stories of loss and stories of love, stories remembered and stories forgotten, stories of a decade of a man’s life because he saved every dime."

Dime Line

This steel cube has a large swoosh cut out of the side, starting at two opposite corners and cutting a large arc deep into the cube.  Inside the cube is a ball suspended as if it is riding through the cut.  The sculpture is made of steel, and textured in patterns radiating around the cut. Architects' Java With Visitor

Two intertwined abstracted non-binary human figures twist about each other in a cork screw pattern. Starting from a wood pedestal, the polished yellow-red bronze geometric feeling base flows upwards through very loosely delineated legs, torsos, arms and shoulders. The piece culminates in tilted heads wrapped about each other face to face in a kiss. Though the piece is of two bodies it is hard to tell where one starts and the other ends as you follow the rotating pattern up and down the work.
