Mega Mall Visions V

This is my self-portrait (my head and neck are visible). It is made in low relief with the image projecting slightly out towards the picture plane. It is very textural as I built the sculpture using handmade paper pulp from recycled paper. It is all white, with some areas of grey and off white.

This is what we have done

An mosaic image of a bee created with seeds and grains in the center of a canvas board. It is natural colored with black, cream, and tan tones. The corners of the piece feature a honey comb motif. 

A screen printed image of a skull placed on top of acrylic paint. The skull appears to be melting and dripping, its primary color is green mixed with blue, outlined in orange and dark navy. The acrylic paint behind the skull are thick vertical brush strokes; black, yellow, teal, lime green, pink, magenta, royal blue, black. 

SMPTE Skull

This carved book sculpture, "biblio-excavation", is created by removing all the excess text leaving only selected imagery. Images are backed with acid free cardstock to make them more ridged. The text block is sealed shut so only the cover opens. This creates both an easy way to display the sculpture as well as a simple storage solution since the work can be shut and housed with the rest of your readable library.

Composition 3

The powerful but backwards letter "F," some text and some imagery from freshly printed fashion magazine pages washed or transfered onto the surface of the paper using solvents, this small graffiti-like piece is set off with the American flag behind it, visible as a tiny inset behind the matt. It is intended to reflect fading glory, the state of the country, a beautiful mess and a timeless snapshot that gives order to chaos.

"F" of Strength

Black and white photo of snow on rocks taken with a Hassleblad film camera. After developing and printing in the darkroom I drew over the photo with black and white alcohol inks. The ink interacted chemically with the photo to create an abstract image. Shapes are variable, textures and layers are created with shades ranging from white-gray-black with traces of blue and magenta.

Enduring Idealism

An abstract painting of cool blues and purple, with shimmers of silver, intersected with thin black tape strips and one silver metallic tape strip. The inspiration for the viewer includes words cut from magazines: explore, imagine, get creative, and confidence.

Phoenix

Scales of the Koi fish are cut out the fins and head is etched in relief. There are separate color sequences projected in the scales and on each separate section of the fishshape and outside

Bluer than Blue

An imagined mountain valley at night with a winding river lit by the glowing full moon above, wisps of clouds among the distant peaks, framed by a steep cliff nearby.

A Midnight Moon

Blue-aqua and green tones mimicking swirling streams with white caps peacefully at the surface while the under lying clutter of water pollution concerns arise. At the lower bottom of the canvas, are shredded plastic water bottle pieces symbolizing the importance to keeping the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes waterways unpolluted and caring for human and marine lives.

Thermal Pool

A photo collage using memories from my grandmother’s scrapbook and a photograph I took of the fall colors on the Mississippi River.

Nostalgia 

Paper cut art consisting of a black sheet of paper with negative space cut out to form the image of a human face smiling enigmatically with ornamental details on the head and around the neck.  The design is inspired by the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom, Cambodia.

Distance

A former Big Mouth Billy Bass is transformed into a 3-dimensional false wooden plaque with wood grain made of actual grains (quinoa) and a mounted crappie fish, also made of crops in the distinctive black and yellow pattern of a crappie fish (corn, wild rice, canola, and other seeds and grains). Former bass fins have been replaced with crappie shaped fins. The plaque has an identifying sign just under the fish that is a pun: Croppie. This piece won a blue ribbon at the 2019 Minnesota State Fair in the Seed and Plant Craft Objects category of the Crop Art competition.
