Indian skill in hardstone carving was known from the earliest times and trading links in materials like jade, crystal, and agate go back to the Roman Empire. The Mughal emperors were particularly fond of jade and the typical Indo-Persian style of Mughal art is evident in the naturalism displayed in this drinking cup in the form of an antelope.
