Spice boxes are an important element of the Havdalah ceremony that closes the Sabbath. Buildings and towers are a traditional form for spice boxes. Marrow's is a stylized version of the neo-Gothic Harkness Tower, the centerpiece of the Memorial Quadrangle at Yale University.
