Corot is universally regarded as the most influential artist of the Barbizon school, and this oil sketch is a beautiful example of his genius as a landscape painter. Seven of the Corot paintings in the museum’s collection were gifts from the Hill family - View of St. Peter’s, Rome now makes eight.
