After returning from studying in Paris in the early 1930s, Yabashi Rokuro, Murai Masanari (1905–1999), and Yamaguchi Kaoru (1907–1968) formed the New Age Painting Exhibition in 1934 to create a platform for geometrical abstraction and surrealism in Japan. In 1950 they went on to found the Modern Art Association, an important step for the history of modern and contemporary Japanese oil painting.
