La ramoneur (The Chimney Sweep), c. 1890

Not on Viewexpand_more

Chimney sweeps in late-nineteenth century France were typically boys small enough to fit inside chimneys to clean out accumulated soot. Despite the many hazards of the profession, Guérard's dignified portrait of the young chimney sweep with his brushes and tools emphasizes the romantic aspects of the occupation over its dangers.
