When Meryon etched this plate, the tower was being restored and was partly covered with scaffolding. The tower is situated at the point where the Pont-au-Change intersects with the Ile de la Cité. The massive structure dwarfs the teeming crowds on the bridge as well as the heavily laden barge under one of the arches.
