Made in the shape of a drum, this small box was likely associated with the scholar's desk as a container for incense or small objects. There is a row of crisply carved bosses along the edge of the lid and the bottom of the container carved to resemble the metal bosses used on a drum to fasten the leather top and bottom to the wooden carcass.
