The Morning of Life was a challenge because Palmer etched it on copper that had grown thin from a previous use. When printing it, he wrote, his plate "bent up like an earwig disturbed in an egg-plum." This sheet is a rare trial proof-an early version the artist pulled to check his progress and make adjustments before printing the final edition.
