The melancholy of this woodcut expresses the true condition of its creator. Maximilian Kurzweil was one of the founders of the progressive Vienna Secession and editor of Ver Sacrum, its highly influential journal of art and design. As professor of the Women’s Art School, he met many young students, one of whom, Helene Heger, became his lover and joined him in a double suicide in 1916.
