Mies van der Rohe, a German-born architect and designer, was perhaps the best known exponent of the international style in architecture and one of the most influential designers of furniture in the twentieth century. His greatest contributions to furniture date from the 1920s. The tubular steel chair was originally designed in 1927, although this example was produced in 1932 for the offices of the Prevoyance Sociale, a Brussels corporation.
