This trophy cup was presented to Duncan Ewen Bowie of McGill University in Montreal, Canada for winning the Bennett Cup at the Intercollegiate Running Race held in Springfield, Massachusetts on July 17, 1873. The race was two miles long and Bowie ran it in 11 minutes and 18-1/8 seconds. Its Neo-Grec decoration appropriately recalls the origins of such competitions in Ancient Greece.
