This early plate, along with the Bird Vase at left, shows how Voulkos brought Abstract Expressionism and ceramics together, revolutionizing the medium. Here Voulkos uses the thick, squarish plate form as a canvas, freely applying vivid glazes and epoxy paints in the manner of Abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline.
