Fargo, North Dakota native John Flannagan attended the Minneapolis School of Art. He is primarily known as a sculptor, but he appreciated the immediacy of drawing and was a prolific draftsman. He tried to reduce forms to spare calligraphic lines. Here, the result bears the unmistakable imprint of Matisse.
