Chinese porcelain painters copied this floral decoration from an illustration by Dutch botanist Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717). This blue-and-white version was originally gilded. A multicolored example is on view in the Doris and Leo Hodroff Gallery (G209) on the museum's second floor.
