Ryo_shibako were used to store different kinds of writing paper. This box may have been part of a larger set that would have included an inkstone box (suzuribako) and a low writing table (bundai). The dramatic landscapes featuring rocky mountain peaks and pine trees was probably inspired by ink paintings of China, a stock subject of Kano school artists.
