Kako Katsumi was born into a family of Kyoto potters who mainly created mass-produced painted porcelain bowls and plates. Kako freed himself from that repetitive work and created his own style. He typically uses red ash glaze, which he sometimes applies in a symmetrical pattern, as in this case.
