Milton Avery and his family, which included his wife, the artist Sally Michel and daughter, the artist March Avery, spent summers at beaches in California and along the East Coast. This painting was likely done quickly from direct observation on one of these vacations. Avery drew and painted constantly, delighted by the relationships between people, sea and birds.
