Rainstorm Picnic is a prime example of Ronald Petersen's artistic career. The artist was known for capturing the idyllic moments and agrarian landscapes found between San Franscico and Sacramento. Peterson used bold, complimenting colors to capture the vibrancy of light and the open, airy feelings of the moments depicted.

Today, the artist is best known for being a member of the "Bridge Generation" of the Bay Area Figuration Movement. The Bay Area Figuration Movement was a response to abstraction and conceptual art movements of the mid to late 20th century in the United States. Other artists connected to the Bay Area Figuration Movement include Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown, Richard Diebenkorn, Manuel Neri, and Wayne Thiebaud.
