Black Pull-Out Tea Bowl, 1990s

Hikidashi guro is a type of ceramic—something like raku but fired at a much higher temperature. The pieces are pulled from the kiln with tongs (hikidasu means “pulling out”) and quickly cooled, which causes the glaze to develop its characteristic color (guro means “black”).
