The early Burmese Buddhist religious texts called Kammawa-sa date from the Pagan period (1044–1287). In this much later example, a thick, glossy black lacquer known as "tamarind seed" is used to write on a folded, lacquered cloth with silver or gold leaf decoration. Such texts were also displayed and stored in areas designated for monastic rites.
