Cuban artist René Portocarrero’s designed this bold and colorful poster to promote the 1964 Cuban-Soviet documentary film Soy Cuba (I am Cuba), directed by the prominent Soviet filmmaker Mikhail Kalatozov (1903–1973). The film dramatizes the experiences of several families living under the regime of the U.S.-supported military dictator Fulgencio Batista, thus alluding to the urgent need for socialist revolution. By reminding viewers about life under Batista, the film’s pseudo-historical narrative reinforces the spirt and ideals of the 1959 Cuban revolution.
