Chicago native Ted Halkin served as a medic on Iwo Jima during World War II and spent the war years administering to soldiers who suffered devastating trauma. His work after the war often cast mythological creatures as allegorical figures of suffering and redemption. Here he uses the harpy, a creature from Greek and Roman mythology, as a threatening agent of torture for those who caused pain and death during the war.
