A generation earlier, these fig leaves would have been on the figure, not below him. The graceful nude and fig leaves reflect the continuing influence of Italy north of the Alps. (Figs were not native to Germany.) This print, one of 17 sheath designs by Heinrich Aldegrever, was trimmed to the edges for mounting in an album.
