Bōsai was the friend of Daigu Ryōkan, a Zen Buddhist monk and poet, whose calligraphy is also admired, and may be the ‘mountain hermit’ referenced in the poem.

Old trees are imbued with the face of spring;
Cold waterfalls arouse mysterious reverberations.
I am thinking of a mountain hermit
Who can appreciate the wind and dew without restraint.
