This is an aizuri-e(blue print) fan print, which shows the actor Bando Mitsugorō IV (1802–1863) as Kan Shōjō in the play Sugawara denju tenarai kagami (Sugawara’s Secrets of Calligraphy), performed in 1832. This portrait depicts the scene in which Kan Shōjō has climbed Mount Tenpai and, in a rage, transforms himself into a demon surrounded by red lightning.
