The sturdy stone wall and big iron ring signal that Auguste Lepère has led us to the embankments along the River Seine. The two men in the foreground have scavenged used cigars and are extracting the unburnt tobacco. They straddle a stack of planks that their neighbors are using for a bed, perhaps finding the planks drier and warmer than the pavement.
