The two girls are kamuro, young attendants of high-class prostitutes. They are trainees and will ultimately become prostitutes themselves, the debut of whom was always an important event in the pleasure quarters. In the back is a kadomatsu, literally “gate pine,” a traditional New Year’s decoration made of pine, bamboo, and sprigs of flowering plum trees.
