The Peking regiments were divided into the Banner of the Interior, which guarded the Forbidden City, and the Exterior Banner, which protected the capital. Emperors, generals, and officers as well as imperial guardsmen all wore ceremonial armor during military reviews and important court audiences. Although these uniforms were never intended as battle dress, they display many vestiges.
