Young Greeks in the Mosque, 1865

Gérôme traveled frequently in the Near East and specialized in scenes of daily life there. Since Moslem sanctuaries are closed to persons not of the Islamic faith, he may have obtained special permission to visit this mosque, or he may have composed the scene from photographs and his own stock of costumes.
