In Japan, the picture books wasere a genre in and of itself. Unlike Western picture books, often associated with children, Japanese publishers and illustrators treated the book as a site for recordkeeping, experimentation, and inspirations. The books served those who had broad interests in art, from wanting to paint to simply wanting to see various motifs and subjects in visual form.
