The Ten Ages of Life, 1616

Not on Viewexpand_more

Death looks quite cheerful today, and my mother would praise his posture. He holds three arrows labeled past, present, and future. In his right hand is a scythe. Above him a banderole bears a verse from Matthew 25: Watch ye, for ye know not the hour or the day when He shall come-a widely used passage in momento mori prints. He is surrounded on three sides by ten small vignettes depicting the process of maturing and aging.
